The cars on this list are some of the fastest street-legal cars in the world with some having over 1,000 horsepower and beyond. While most of these cars are rare and incredibly expensive, there are some on this list that you might know of or have been passed up by driving to work.
Koenigsegg One:1
Introduced in 2014, the Koenigsegg One:1 is considered one of the first mega cars in the world. The horsepower to curb weight ratio is 1:1 which is a "dream-equation" and was completely impossible only a few years prior.
The Koenigsegg produces 1 Megawatt of power and is designed optimally to withstand the power that it can produce on the track. The One:1 can go from 0-400 km/h in approximately 10 seconds.
Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport
Considered a limited special edition of the Bugatti Veyron, the Veyron Super Sport 16.4 is an intimidating and beautiful work of art. The designer of the Veyron was Ettore Bugatti, who combed methodically over every detail on the car's surface to improve its performance.
The Veyron has 16-cylinders, 1,200 horsepower and can go from 0 to 100 km/h n 2.5 seconds. Bugatti only made a limited number of the 16.4 SuperSport and it is currently sold out worldwide.
Fahlke Larea GT1 S12
The Fahlke Larea GT1 S12 is a carbon fiber lightweight powerhouse that was unveiled to the public in 2014 at the Essex International Motor Show in Germany.
The Fahlke Larea has a power-to-weight ratio of 1.38:1 unlike the dream equation of the Koenigsegg One:1 but the Larea GT1 can still produce on the track with a 7.2-liter engine that pushes out 1242 horsepower and can go from 0 to 62 mph in just 2 seconds.
Hennessey Venom GT
The Hennessey Venom GT is a 2-door coupe designed by the Texas-based Hennessey Performance Team and released to the public in February, 2014.
In 2014, a speed test was conducted at the Kennedy Space Center on its Shuttle Landing Facility's 3.2 mile runway. The Venom GT hit a top speed of 270.49 mph. All of the vehicle's take six months to complete and Hennessey limited its production to just 29 cars worldwide.
Rimac C_Two
The Rimac C_Two is one of the first hypercars made available to the general public. Rimac has been making electric cars since 2009 with the latest Rimac model coming out in 2020.
Its front wheels are designed with their own single-speed gearbox and electric motor making them drive under more control in slippery and wet conditions and also helps with the handling of the vehicle. Rimac is producing the C_Two in limited quantities and plan on only making 150 units each priced at $2,000,000.
9ff GT9
The 9ff GT9-R is based on the Porsche 911 and was built by the German company 9ff Fahrzeugtechnik GmBH from 2007 to 2011. The company kept what they liked about the 911 and heavily modified the body and engine to give it more speed and make it more aerodynamic.
The inside of the 9ff GT9's came with blue leather, a roll cage for safety making it more safe and lightweight. Buyers had the option of choosing between a 3.6L or 4.0L twin-turbocharged H6 engine that produced horsepower from 738 bhp to 1,120 bhp.
SSC Ultimate Aero TT
The SSC Ultimate Aero held the record for the fastest production car in the world in 2009 at a top speed of 255 mph. Designed by Shelby Supercars, the SSC Ultimate Aero TT is a 2-door coupe with a 6.4 L twin-turbo V8 engine.
Its design allows the engine to produce 1,287 horsepower and reach top speeds of over 270 mph. Its generational upgrades include aerobrakes and interior updates like the 1-piece billet aluminum engine block.
Koenigsegg Regera
Designers at Koenigsegg specifically wanted the Regera to be a luxury Megacar unlike its other lightweight, race-like road cars in its lineup. The Regera includes the twin-turbo V8 engine that has been redesigned with new powertrain technology allowing the engine to be lighter and more efficient.
The Regera has a combined horsepower over 1500 with over 2000 Nm of torque. One of the unique features of the Regera is the Constellation Daytime Running Lights which are especially designed to look like stars in the night sky.
Dauer Porsche 962 Le Mans
One of the older cars on the list, the Dauer Porsche 962 was as impressive in 1993 when it debuted at the Frankfurt International Motor Show as it is today.
In 1994, it would race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and come in first place handily. John Dauer, the designer of the vehicle, designed it especially to participate in races but also designed it to be street legal. In 1993, the Dauer Porsche 962 Le Mans had a top speed of 251 mph.
Koenigsegg CCXR
What makes the CCXR so impressive, is the fact that it is the worlds first supercar that can run on recyclable ethanol. Despite running on green fuel, the CCXR's 4.7-L twin-supercharged engine produces 806 horsepower on the recycled ethanol and bumps up to 1018 horsepower on biofuel.
Outside of being really fast, the car is just downright gorgeous and was named "One of the 10 Most Beautiful Cars in History" by Forbes Magazine.
Lotec Sirius
The Lotec Sirius is a German manufactured supercar with production starting in 2000. It comes with butterfly doors, rear-wheel drive, and a mid-engine.
Under the hood, it totes a 6.0-L V-12 twin-turbo engine and with a 6-speed manual transmission. The Lotec Sirius had a top speed of 249 mph and could go from 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds. Like most cars on this list, the Sirius is very rare with only 5 cars made in its first year of production.
Orca SC7
The Orca SC7 was a dream team car designed and built by Rene Beck and his father and was shown at the 2002 Geneva International Motor Show.
Like the beautiful watches designed in Sweden, the Orca SC7 is also Swiss designed and manufactured and is just as stunning on the outside as it is impressive under the hood. In 2004, the Orca SC7 had a top speed of 249 mph and could go from 0 to 6 in just 2.4 seconds.
Saleen S7 Le Mans Edition
Steve Saleen of Saleen Automotive Inc, wanted to design an American supercar and unveiled the Saleen S7 Le Mans Edition at the LA International Auto Show.
The S7 has a 7.0-L twin-turbo engine with 1300 horsepower and a lightweight steel space frame with honeycomb composite panels. The airflow of the S7 is controlled by a front-tray and side skirt, a full-body-width rear spoiler and heat-rejecting tinted glass. The S7 is limited and only 7 have been produced at over $1,000,000 each.
W Motors Lykan Hypersport
The W Motors Lykan Hypersport became an international car when it was driven in Fast & Furious 7 and was the most expensive car ever included in the movie franchise.
Inspired by the mythical "Lykan" wolves, W Motors wanted to create a car that was both elegant, powerful and mythical. Considered one of the most exclusive cars on the planet, the Lykan has a handcrafted carbon fiber body and features the world's first holographic display with interactive motion control complete with 440 diamonds lined in its LED headlights.
Ultima Evolution 1020 PS
The Ultima EVO, available as both a coupe and a convertible is the encapsulation of all of the developments that Ultima has gathered in its last 30 years of designing and producing cars.
The EVO is manufactured in the UK but can also be purchased and assembled at home if the buyer is so inclined. Under the hood, the Ultima has a supercharged V8 engine and a stopping power of 100 mom to 0 mom in 3.4 seconds.
McLaren F1
The McLaren is synonymous with beautiful fast cars. Manufactured by McLaren Cars in England, the F1 is powered by a BMW engine.
While sports cars have come a long way since the 90's when the McLaren was introduced, in 1990, the McLaren’s lightweight aerodynamic body helped give it an extra edge on the racetrack. Top engineer Gordon Murray was one of the first designers to add carbon fiber and lightweight dense metals to the body of a car.
HTT Locus Plethore Ic750
Debuted in 2007 at the Montreal International Auto Show, the HTT Plethore is a supercharged 2-door sports car manufactured by HTTP Automobile in Canada. The body of the Plethora is made of carbon fiber and the V8 supercharged engine was designed off of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.
The Plethore has over 750 horsepower and less than 10 are produced a year with most being claimed to owners before they are complete. Unfortunately, the company has gone through financial hardship in the last few years.
SSC Aero SC/8T
Holding the title of the fastest production car in the world in Guinness World Records from 2007-2010 when it was beaten by the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, the SSC Aero SC is a mid-engine sports car developed by SSC(previously known as Shelby SuperCars) and produced from 2006-2013.
In 2004, when the SSC was built, it had 782 horsepower and a max speed of 236 mph and in later years would have a top speed of 273 mph.
Bugatti Divo
With only 40 cars being made and produced worldwide and with all 40 of the cars already sold, the Bugatti Divo is one of the newest and most exclusive Bugatti models in Bugatti's lineup.
With a $5.8 million price tag, the biggest enhancements to the Divo is its improved aerodynamics and of course its bigger and better engine. The Divo’s engine is an 8.0-L W-16 engine that has four turbochargers which overall produce 1500 horsepower.
Koenig C62
Koenig is a German group dedicated to taking luxury sports cars and making modifications to them to increase their track and output production on the track and on the road.
The Keonig C62 was based on the Porsche 962 and was Koenig's first street-legal car. With a base price of £350,000, the C62 had a 6 cylinder turbocharged engine, a top speed of 237 mph, and could go from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds and 0-124 mph in 9.9 seconds.
Zenvo STI 50S
Danish supercar maker Zenvo is dedicated to bringing a supercar to the North American market and the Zenvo STI 50S is just the beginning.
Available in three different colors; Intense Red, Crystal White, and Mediterranean Blue, the base model of the STI comes with a 7.0-liter supercharged V8 engine that produces 1,104 horsepower and has 1,050 lbs/ft of torque. While Zenvo has plans to bring more supercars to the American market, there will only be three cars made in total at $1.8 million dollars apiece.
Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Super Sport
Originally designed and made to be a race car only, the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Super Sport was designed by the AMG branch of Mercedes which focuses on the vehicles in Mercedes' high-performance lineup.
The engine was a 7.3-L V12 engine which had also been used in the Pagani Zonda and Mercedes-Benz SL73 AMG and generated 655 horsepower. Mercedes only produced 5 Super Sports during its production run time with the car not seeing any future revisions from AMG.
Rossin-Bertin Vorax
Created by former GM designer Fharys Rossin and Natalino Bertin where the vehicle gets its name, the Vorax is a Brazilian manufactured supercar made to compete with the European supercar market.
The Vorax has a carbon fiber body and a 5.0-L V10 engine similar to the BMW M5. The Vorax can go from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds, has 570 horsepower and a top speed of 205 mph with a supercharged version including 750 horsepower and a top speed of 231 mph.
Brabus Rocket 800
Revealed to the public in 2011 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, the Brabus Rocket 800 is a carbon fiber sports car based on the Mercedes C218 sedan.
The engine which was a twin-turbo V12 that produced 789 horsepower originally started as the Mercedes-Benz M275's engine and was heavily modified. The Rocket 800 went from 0-100 in 3.7 seconds and has been recently preceded by the Brabus Rockret 900 which started production in 2015.
Toyota GT-One TS020
Raced during the 1998 and 1999 Le Mans tour, the Toyota GT-One TS020 is a sports car designed and manufactured by Toyota and based off of the Toyota Supra.
By exploiting a loophole discovered by Mercedes-Benz, Toyota engineers were able to develop a trunk space that could hold an additional fuel tank. While the GT-One never placed first in any of the races that it was entered into, it did place in a qualifying 2nd, 7th, ad 8th place and was only beaten by its class competitor, Mercedes-Benz.
Leblanc Mirabeau
Just entering into the American market, Leblanc is originally a Swiss-based manufacturer that specializes in making high-performance automobiles in small batches. The Leblanc Mirabeau was an open street-legal race car produced with over 700 horsepower and had a 4700 cc supercharged engine.
On the track, the LeBlanc Mirabeau has a top speed of 370 km/h, and costs roughly $650,000. Constructed of Kevlar and Carbon fiber, the Mirabeau weighed just a fraction of the Koenigsegg CCR.
De Macross Epique GT1
The Epique GT1 was a Canadian supercar created in the late 2000's and was inspired by the Le Mans racers of the 1980’s. It was based on a carbon fiber and an aluminum tub with a supercharged 5.4-L Ford V8 and could produce 80 horsepower.
Some of the design cues on the Epique came from other manufacturers such as Ford, Porsche, and Ferrari. In 2010 when the car was launched, there were 200 units produced with another 30 produced afterward a few years later.
Jaguar XJ220S TWR
Produced by the British luxury car manufacturer Jaguar from 1992-1994, the Jaguar XJ220 claimed the title of the fastest production car from 1992 to 1993.
The engine, a V12 was actually designed by some Jaguar employees during their spare time who wanted to make a modern version of the Jaguar 24 Hours of Le Mans racing cars of the 1950's and 1960’s. There were 282 cars made from 1992-1994 with each one costing £470,000, it was one of the fastest and most expensive cars at that time.
Noble M600
Hand-built individually by a small team of craftsmen in England, the Noble M600 is a super-light carbon fiber sports car. Buyers interested in the Noble M600 can choose from different body styles including the M600 Coupe and M600 Speedster.
When it comes to the Noble M600's performance, the car is powered by the Yamaha Judd V8 4439cc twin-turbo engine and has 604 lbs. of torque. At its top speed, it goes 225 mph and can go from 0-120 in just 8.9 seconds with the chassis made with a stainless steel tub.
Ferrari P4/5 Pininfarina
Specially made for film director James Glickenhaus, the Ferrari P4/5 is a unique special edition of the Pininfarina, originally produced by the Italian sports car manufacturer Ferrari.
Costing over $4,000,000, Glickenhaus wanted to have a custom car made for him that was similar to a modern Ferrari P. While the designers were going for a more retro look for the car, the exterior was made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic. It had the same engine as the Enzo Ferrari which produced over 660 bhp at the time.
Pagani Huayra
The successor to the Pagani Zonda, the Huayra was named after a South American wind god called Huayra Tata. It was equipped with a twin-turbo V12 engine that produced over 700 bhp and had 728lb ft of torque.
The Huayra had a top speed of over 230 mph and could go from 0 to 60 mpg in roughly 3.5 seconds. On its production run, there were only 20 Huayra that have been sold at £2.1million a piece with all of them being sold right after production.
Lamborghini Veneno
Developed to celebrate Lamborghini's 50th anniversary, the Veneno was introduced at the 2013 Geneva International Motor Show and at its introduction was one of the most expensive production cars in the world at an entry price of $4,000,000.
The engine for the Veneno came from the Lamborghini’s Aventador engine which was a 6.5-L V12 that produced 740 horsepower and had 509lb ft of torque. There were only 14 Veneno’s produced in total from 2013-2014; 5 coupes and 9 roadsters.
Nissan R390 GT1
The Nissan R390 was a road car produced by Nissan that was based on the 1997 Nissan R390 racing car. The road car is powered by the 3.5-L twin-turbocharged V8 engine and has an output of 550 horsepower and 470lb ft of torque.
On the road, the Nissan R390 can go from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and can complete a quarter-mile in 11.9 seconds with a top speed of 220 mph. Nissan offered to build further versions of the R390 for US $1,000,000 each.
RUF CTR2 Sport
Based on the Porsche 911, the Ruf CTR2 is a 2-door German-built sports car that was produced between 1995 and 1997.
Alois Ruf Jr., the owner of Ruf wanted to create an ultra-high performance vehicle that was faster than the Porsche 911 at that time and came up with the CTR2 Sport. The CTR2 Sport was offered to buyers at US$315,000 and could accelerate from 0-69 mph in just under 3.5 seconds.
Yamaha OX99-11
While Yamaha is mostly known for its motorcycles, back in the early 1990s, they also produced sports cars like the Yamaha OX99-11.
Yamaha wanted to enter into the racing scene with cars of their own starting in 1989 and enlisted their English engineering consultant Ypsilon Technology and IAD to come up with cars that they could win races with. The V12 engine produced over 400 horsepower and had a price tag of $800,000.
Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster
Taking the place as Lamborghini's flagship model in 2018, the Aventador is one of the most commonly well-known models in the Lamborghini lineup.
The engine on the Aventador is a naturally aspirated 6.5-L V12 engine that produces 730 horsepower allowing it to go from 0-60 mph in just 2.6 mph with an overall top speed of 217 mph. Buyers interested in the Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster can expect to pay a base price of $460,247.
Dodge Challenger Demon
The Challenger SRT Demon was produced and designed by Dodge in 2017 and is one of Dodge's fastest production cars to date. Only offered in the Challenger model, the Demon has a 6.2-L Hemi V-8 engine that produces 840 horsepower and can cover a quarter-mile in 9.65 seconds at a 140 mph.
The SRT Demon was an extremely limited model from Dodge and brand-new costs $84,995, coming in tens of thousands of dollars cheaper than other cars with the same speed.
Aston Martin One-77
Revealed at the 2008 Paris International Motor Show, the Aston Martin One-77 is a 2-door coupe sports car built in the UK. It is handcrafted from a carbon fiber aluminum body and produces 750 horsepower and has 553lb ft of torque.
At the time of its release, the One-77 claimed to have the most powerful naturally aspirated engine in the world. Only 77 of these cars were built and they were each sold for £1,150,000.
Vector Wiegert W8 Twin Turbo
Produced from 1989 to 1993, the Vector Wiegert W8 Twin Turbo is an American sports car designed and inspired by the Alfa Romeo Carabo.
The manufacturer, Vector Aeromotive Corporation spent almost two decades between the 1970s and 1980s waiting to secure financial reserves to invest in the production of the W8 as it was the dream car of Vector's head engineer David Kotska for years. The W8 went from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and had a top speed of 242 mph.
Apollo Arrow
Powered by the 4.0L twin turbocharged Audi V8 engine, the Apollo Arrow was introduced to the public in 2016 at the Geneva International Motor Show.
While most cars have a 5 or even 6-speed transmission, the Arrow had a 7-speed transmission that propelled it over 224 mph and allowed it to go from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds. Followed by the Apollo S, Apollo Automobil is currently working on the development of a new model.
