Flying Taxis Are The Future
Do you know all those movies set in the future that have flying cars and taxi cabs? Made at a time when filmmakers dreamed the impossible, those crazy concepts are now becoming a reality. Ridesharing giant Uber recently unveiled plans for a flying taxi service that it's currently testing and plans to launch in 2023.
The company is making a huge investment in "urban air mobility" and cites increased traffic congestion as a major reason why. Showing off the concept hybrid in Washington was the head of Uber's Elevate Division Eric Allison, "There's an upper bound to what we can do on the ground. We can move transportation off the grid and into the sky in a meaningful way."
Los Angeles and Dallas will pilot the program beginning in 2020, with a full-scale launch hopefully coming three years later.
Not to be outdone, a new Cora taxi aircraft has been test launching in New Zeland. Not much is known about Uber's flying competitor, but some details have leaked. The pilotless air taxis will hold two people and have the ability to land rooftop to rooftop.
Cora's engineers claim it will be one of the safest aircraft ever produced, but only time will tell. Which air taxi service do you plan to use?
