Say Goodbye To These Vehicles Being Discontinued in 2021
Most cars are pulled from production due to low sales, or to make space on the production line for a new model. For the past years, automakers ceased production of some legendary automobiles as the demand suddenly plummeted in favor of SUVs, crossovers, and pickup trucks.
Keep reading to find out about 26 different cars that will be discontinued by the next model year, as well as cars that were dropped earlier this year. Unsurprisingly, most of them were victims of the ever-growing SUV craze that has taken the auto industry by storm. What's more, it does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
Ford Mustang Shelby GT350(R)
The Shelby GT350 and GT350R are hardcore, high-performance variants of the Ford Mustang. They are fitted with, track suspension as well as a powerful 5.2L "Voodoo" V8 under the hood. They've been in production since 2015.
This year, Ford released an all-new Shelby GT500 variant of the Mustang. It's an even more souped-up variant of the pony car, packing a 760-horsepower supercharged V8 under the hood. The new GT500 dethroned the existing GT350 and the GT350R, hence they will be dropped from Ford's lineup by the 2021 model year.
Honda Civic Si
In addition to dropping the 2-door base model Honda Civic from its lineup, Honda is going to put the sporty 2-door Civic Si on pause for the 2021 model year. The Civic Si coupe packs a 205-horsepower 1.5L motor while weighing only around 2,900 pounds. In effect, the sporty coupe can accelerate to 60 miles per hour in just 6.3 seconds.
Though the production of the Si is only paused for one model year, it will only return as a 4-door sedan. The 2-door Civic Si will no longer be available, at least for this generation of the vehicle.
Chevrolet Impala
The Impala is a full-size sedan by Chevrolet that has been in and out of production since its initial launch in 1958. Back then, the Impala was incredibly appealing. The car's flawless exterior styling was inspired by the Corvette, yet the Impala had the convenience and practicality of a large 4-door sedan.
Fast forward to 2014 when Chevy unveiled the 10th-generation Impala, having discontinued the model a couple of times in the past. That same year, the car was dubbed the best affordable large car in the US. Sadly, 2021 could very well be the definite end of the Impala. The last Chevrolet Impala rolled off the production line in February 2020, marking the end of a car that was once an icon of American automobiles.
BMW i8
BMW celebrated the end of the i8's 6-year-long production run with the release of a limited Sophisto Edition variant of the innovative sports car. The base model i8 is powered by a 1.5L straight-three petrol engine, as well as a 98kW battery pack. The car's total power output is 369 horsepower.
According to rumors, a successor to the BMW i8 may already be in development. Various sources claim that BMW's new plug-in hybrid sports car will be unveiled by 2022. Hopefully, its range will be more impressive than the i8's 23-mile all-electric range.
BMW M8 Coupe & Convertible
The M8 is a high-performance, souped-up variant of the new BMW 8-series that has been in production since 2019. The M8 is available in three body variants: four-door Gran Coupe, two-door Coupe, and two-door Convertible. Additionally, buyers can opt for the monstrous 617-horsepower M8 Competition, in case the 600-hp base model wasn't powerful enough.
Luckily, the Coupe and Convertible variants of the M8 aren't exactly gone. They will no longer be sold in the US due to low sales figures, though they will still be available in Europe. The M8 Competition will not be available in North America starting in 2021, either.
Jaguar XE
The XE has been the entry-level Jaguar in the United States. While the elegant 4-door sedan will continue to be sold in Europe following a major facelift, the model has been dropped from the North American lineup completely. The automaker claims that the XE's larger cousin, the XF, offers better value for potential buyers.
To compensate for discontinuing the XE in North America, Jaguar will reduce the price of the XF sedan. What's more, the Jaguar E-Pace Crossover will serve as the automaker's entry-level vehicle starting in 2021.
Mercedes-Benz SL
The sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz SL is a classy 2-door sports car that's been around since 2012. The SL is offered with a variety of powerplants, ranging from a 3.0L V6 all the way to a 6.0L twin-turbo V12 for the limited SL65 AMG variant. Mercedes-Benz only sold around 2100 units of the SL-Class in the US in 2019.
The current SL is getting dropped from the Mercedes-Benz lineup in favor of an all-new seventh-generation Mercedes-Benz SL. The car will officially be unveiled very soon, stay tuned.
Mercedes-Benz S Class Coupe & Convertible
The sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz S Class that's currently available is getting replaced with its recently-unveiled successor, the seventh-gen (W223) S-Class. The sixth-gen S-Class is available in different body variants, such as a short-wheelbase sedan, long-wheelbase sedan, 2-door coupe, and a 2-door convertible. A souped-up 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 variant of the S-Class, the S63 AMG, is available as a sedan, coupe, and convertible.
Mercedes-Benz is going to sell the 2-door S-Class Coupe and Convertible variants throughout 2021, before discontinuing it in the United States for the 2022 model year. Now is the last chance to grab a 2-door S-Class!
Cadillac CT6
Cadillac's sporty sedan, the CT6, has been around since the 2016 model year. Sadly, car buyers flock to SUV's and crossovers rather than sedans or coupes. In effect, the sales figures are plummeting. Cadillac only sold 7,951 units of the CT6 in the US throughout 2019. That same year, nearly 50,000 units of the CT5 crossover were purchased by customers in the US alone.
However, sales of the CT6 are skyrocketing in China and the American automaker has decided to continue selling the CT6 there. Cadillac sold over 22,000 units of the CT6 in China in 2019, which is twice as much as just two years earlier.
Lexus GS
The GS is a luxurious sedan that was introduced in the 1990s to compete with the BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The decline in popularity of sedans took its toll on the Japanese manufacturer, Lexus stopped selling the GS in Europe back in 2018. Sales in the US plummeted as car buyers preferred SUVs rather than 4-door sedans, and Lexus decided to completely cease production of the GS by August 2020. Less than 3,500 units of the GS were sold in the US in 2019.
Before dropping the car from the lineup completely, Lexus introduced a limited-edition Black Line package for the GS350F Sport. The package added certain cosmetic tweaks to the vehicle, its production was strictly limited to just 200 units.
Dodge Grand Caravan
The Grand Caravan is one of America's favorite minivans. It first debuted in 1984 together with the Plymouth Voyager to offer an alternative to Chrysler's minivan lineup. The minivan has been in production ever since. The latest, fifth-generation Grand Caravan was introduced for the 2008 model year.
For the 2021 model year, FCA decided to drop the Grand Caravan from its minivan lineup and shut down the van's production, leaving the Chrysler Pacifica and Voyager as the flagship minivan models. The final Dodge Grand Caravan rolled off the production line on August 31st, 2020.
Dodge Journey
The Journey crossover is another vehicle that will be eliminated from the automaker's lineup by 2021. The Dodge Journey was first introduced for the 2009 model year. Despite a facelift in 2011, along with the addition of the Pentastar 3.6L V6 motor, sales began to drop year by year. Dodge slashed the trim levels to just two variants for the 2020 model year and dropped the Journey completely for 2021.
The discontinuation of the Journey and the Grand Caravan will result in Dodge only offering three vehicles starting in 2021: The Durango SUV, the Challenger coupe, and the Charger sedan. The Grand Caravan together with the Journey made up nearly 40% of Dodge's total sales in 2020.
Ford Fusion
The Fusion is Ford's budget-friendly 4-door sedan that was first introduced for the 2006 model year. The car features a variety of different economical engines, ranging from a 175-horsepower 2.5L flat-four to a 325-horsepower 2.7L Ecoboost V6.
In 2017, Ford sold over 20% fewer units of the Fusion than the previous year. The lack of popularity among sedans caused Ford to discontinue the Fusion by 2021. Instead, the automaker will focus on selling pick-up trucks, SUVs, crossovers, and the Mustang sports car. Ford has always had a 4-door sedan in its model range since 1923 when a 4-door variant of the Model T debuted.
Honda Civic Coupe
Don't worry, the Honda Civic is not going anywhere. In fact, the Japanese manufacturer will unveil an all-new generation of the Civic compact car in 2022. However, Honda will discontinue the coupe body style variant of the Civic by the 2021 model year due to low sales.
The Civic Coupe was available with a variety of different engines. Luckily, the 4-door, high-performance 306-horsepower Honda Civic Type R remains in Honda's lineup. Until the next generation of the Civic is revealed, that is.
Chevrolet Sonic
The Sonic is a subcompact car first released by Chevrolet in 2011. The fuel-efficient car may have been a success at first, though its sales have been dropping since 2015 after they peaked at 93 518 units.
Chevrolet already stopped selling the Sonic in Canada in 2018. In 2019, the Aveo (Sonic's equivalent for the Asian market) was dropped in South Korea. The last-ever Chevrolet Sonic will roll off the assembly line on October 20, 2020. Instead, the carmaker wants to utilize the American production line to build EVs.
Honda Fit
Generally, car buyers no longer want small cars. SUVs and crossovers have taken the world by storm, resulting in a dramatic decrease in sales among smaller vehicles. The Honda Fit, first unveiled in 2007, is a prime example. The Japanese manufacturer confirmed that the Fit will no longer be sold in the United States after the 2020 model year.
The automaker recently unveiled an all-new generation of the Fit that will be sold globally. However, the Fit will not be available on the North American market. In effect, 2020 is the last model year for the Honda Fit in the United States.
Kia Optima
Back in June this year, Kia unveiled an all-new midsize sedan named the K5. The elegant 4-door sedan features up to 311-horsepower in its most powerful variant, as well as a refined AWD-drivetrain. According to Kia, the new 2021 K5 outperforms the BMW 330i.
Unfortunately, the South Korean manufacturer retired the Kia Optima in favor of the new K5. The Optima was first released back in 2000 as a competitor for Toyota's popular sedan, the Camry. Despite the Kia K5 technically being a fifth-generation Optima, the automaker dropped the Optima nameplate and instead introduced the K5 as an all-new model in the lineup.
Lincoln Continental
Reduced sales of 4-door sedans affected yet another automaker. The Lincoln Continental is a full-size premium sedan that has been in and out of production all the way since 1938. The latest, tenth-generation (pictured above), was unveiled for the 2017 model year. Just three years later, the manufacturer confirmed that the Continental will be discontinued before 2021.
The tenth-generation Continental was available with three different engine variants, ranging from a 305-horsepower 3.7L V6 up to a 400-horsepower Ecoboost 3.0L. The sedan was only offered with an automatic transmission.
Mercedes-Benz SLC
Four-door sedans and compact cars aren't the only types of vehicles that are suffering from a dramatic decline in popularity. As car buyers flock to SUVs and crossovers, the demand for 2-seater convertibles is lower than ever, especially in the United States. In fact, Mercedes-Benz only sold 1,840 units of the SLC-Class in 2019. In comparison, production peaked at 11,278 units in 2005.
In 2019, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the Final Edition package for the SLC (pictured above). The limited 2-seater commemorated the car's 11-year-long production run. The package was available for the SLC 300, as well as the SLC 43 AMG variants.
Alfa Romeo 4C
The Alfa Romeo 4C is a brilliant lightweight sports car that was launched by the Italian automaker back in 2013. Despite the car's impressive performance and unique styling, it was never a popular choice among buyers. In fact, Alfa Romeo only sold 201 units in Europe throughout 2019.
Alfa Romeo already stopped selling the 4C Coupe in the United States back in 2018 but the Spider was available until 2019. The automaker announced the discontinuation of the model back in late 2019, though the car was still in production until this year.
Volkswagen Beetle
The Beetle is unarguably one of the most iconic German cars of all time. The original Beetle was created by Ferdinand Porsche after he was asked to create "The People's Car." The vehicle was introduced in the United States back in 1949 and has been available pretty much ever since.
Interestingly, sales of the Beetle in the US peaked in 1968 when the Beetle played a role in Disney's iconic "The Love Bug". That year, Volkswagen sold over 420,000 units of the Beetle in the US alone. In comparison, only around 15,000 units were sold in the US in 2017. The German automaker announced the worldwide discontinuation of the model back in 2018. The last Beetle rolled off the production line in 2019.
Lincoln MKZ
The MKZ is yet another Lincoln that's discontinued before the end of the year, as the automaker's focus shifts strictly to SUVs. The 4-door sedan has been in production since 2006.
The MKZ shared its platform with the Ford Fusion, and the production of both cars was stopped on July 31st, 2020. Lincoln announced that its focus will shift strictly to producing large SUVs. The MKZ, as well as the Continental, will both be dropped by the end of 2020. In effect, Lincoln will feature an all-SUV lineup in 2021, which is a first for the American manufacturer. What's more, the automaker promises an electric SUV in the near future.
Toyota Yaris
Despite being one of the most popular choices among the small car segment in Europe, sales of the Yaris are plunging in North America. 2019 saw a 19.5% decrease in annual sales compared to the previous year, with a little over 27,000 units sold in the US. It is no secret that American car buyers prefer large vehicles over small compacts such as the Yaris.
Toyota has no plans to introduce a successor to the Yaris for the US market, according to various reports. However, Toyota did introduce a Yaris variant based on the Mazda2 for the Canadian market back in 2020.
Acura RLX
The Acura RLX is a 4-door sedan that's been in production since 2014. It comes fitted with a powerful 3.5L V6 that peaks at 310 horsepower. The sporty RLX, however, has definitely not been the go-to sedan among buyers. Only 179 units of the RLX were sold in the first quarter of 2020. The car's steep starting price at $55,925 certainly did not help to drive up the sales, either.
Starting in 2021, the RLX sedan will be replaced by an all-new Acura TLX, which will become the brand's flagship sedan. The base model TLX is powered by a 272hp 2.0L inline-four. A more powerful, performance-oriented variant packs a 3.0L V6 rated at 355 horsepower.
Hyundai Elantra GT
The Hyundai Elantra GT is a hatchback version of Hyundai's compact car, the Elantra, also referred to as the Hyundai i30 across other markets. The Elantra GT first entered production in 2013, followed by an extensive facelift in 2018. Under the hood, the Elantra is either fitted with a 161hp flat-four or a 201hp turbocharged flat-four.
In 2021, Hyundai will begin selling the new seventh-gen Elantra that was unveiled earlier this year. However, a GT variant will not be available anymore. Instead, the Korean manufacturer had decided to drop the GT body style from its US-lineup.
Jaguar XF Sportbrake
As previously mentioned, Jaguar will drop its entry-level XE sedan in favor of the more expensive XF. Despite introducing an array of updates for the XF sedan for the 2021 model year, Jaguar chose to discontinue the Sportbrake wagon body variant in the United States due to low sales. The wagon variant of the XF sedan was only available in the US since 2018! However, the model will still be sold in other countries.
The 2020 Jaguar XF sedan is available with four different engine options, ranging from a 2.0L turbocharged flat-four up to a 3.0L V6. Initially, the Sportbrake variant was only available together with the 3.0L V6 motor.
Buick Regal
The Buick Regal has quite a long legacy, it was first introduced for the 1977 model year and was continuously in production until 2004. Then, the fifth-generation of the Regal, based on the Opel Insignia, debuted in 2011 and production resumed for another 9 years.
The latest, sixth-gen Regal was introduced in 2019. That same year, Buick only sold around 10,000 units of the Regal in the United States. The manufacturer decided to cease the production of the Regal 4-door sedan and shift its focus to well-selling SUVs instead.
Buick Cascada
Two-door convertibles are nowhere near as popular as they used to be. The Cascada was GM's attempt at an affordable, somewhat sporty convertible. It was first released for the 2014 model year, the base model is fitted with a 1.4L turbocharged flat-four that makes 118 horsepower. The Cascada only makes 197hp in its most powerful variant, thanks to a 1.6L flat-four.
Sales figures for the Cascada have dropped significantly over the years. In 2016, GM sold a little over 7,000 units of the convertible in the US. In its final year of production, just 2,535 units of the Cascada were sold in the US. The Cascada was discontinued for the 2020 model year.
Fiat 500
The Fiat 500 appeared on the US market in 2010, marking the Italian automaker's return to North America after 26 years. Although the current-generation Fiat 500 debuted in 2007, the iconic Italian automobile dates back to 1957.
FCA was struggling to sell the new subcompact in the US from the very beginning. Sales reached an all-time high at 43,772 units back in 2012. Within a few years, the demand for subcompact cars plummeted even further. Fiat was down to just 5,370 units sold in all of 2018. The automaker pulled the Fiat 500 from the North American market by the end of 2019. It is still in production in Europe.
Jaguar XJ
Jaguar's luxury 4-door sedan has been in production for a total of 9 years, it was first unveiled back in 2009. The luxury sedan is Jaguar's alternative to the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series, or the Mercedes-Benz S Class. The automaker released a limited variant of the sedan, the XJR 575, as a farewell before shutting down the production in mid-2019.
The release of the XJ's fully-electric successor has been postponed. The car was initially supposed to be unveiled later this year, with production beginning in early 2021.
Lincoln MKC
The Lincoln MKC is a crossover that was first introduced in 2014 for the following model year. The compact SUV was available with two engine options, a 2.0L Ecoboost flat-four generating 245 horsepower for the base model, as well as a 2.3L Ecoboost that peaks at 285hp.
The MKC was dropped from Lincoln's lineup by the end of the 2019 model year. From 2020 onwards, the vehicle was replaced by the new Lincoln Corsair, which is another premium crossover from the American automaker.
Toyota Prius C
The Prius C was introduced for the 2012 model year. The main aim of the small, fuel-efficient hybrid was to be an affordable vehicle for everyday use. The timing seemed perfect, too, as the US gas prices were skyrocketing to an average of $3.6 USD per gallon. However, the subcompact never really took off.
Toyota only sold around 35,000 units in the first year. Average gas prices settling at below $3 per gallon certainly did not boost the demand for hybrids, either. In 2018, Toyota only sold around 8,000 units of the Prius C., before discontinuing the car just a year later.
Infiniti QX30
Infiniti began selling vehicles in North America back in 1989. Nissan's luxury vehicle division has been struggling to find buyers, and the QX30 crossover reflects that problem. The car was revealed for the 2017 model year and was discontinued after a short two-year-long production run. Less than 30,000 units were sold in the US.
The QX30 is powered by one of three different Mercedes-Benz engines. The base model came fitted with a 2.0L flat-four that peaked at 208 horsepower. A diesel variant was available, too, with Mercedes-Benz's 2.2L 170hp powerplant.
Infiniti Q70
The Q70 is Infiniti's premium 4-door sedan that was in production since 2013. Much like the previously mentioned Jaguar XJ, the Q70 was released as an alternative for the Mercedes-Benz S Class, BMW 7-Series, or the Audi A8. It was offered with a variety of engine options, ranging from a fuel-efficient 2.0L flat-four (only for the Chinese market) up to a powerful 420hp 5.6L V8.
The demand for sedans continued dropping, and the Q70 was no exception. In 2015, for example, Nissan sold nearly 8,000 units of the elegant sedan. Just four years later, the sales figures hit an all-time low at 2,552 units sold in the United States. The following year, the automaker announced that the Q70 will be laid off from the 2020 model year onwards.
Ford Flex
Ford revealed the Flex back in 2008. The crossover SUV was available with two different 3.5L V6 motors along with an automatic transmission. The base model was offered with a 262hp Duramax V6 and front-wheel-drive. An all-wheel-drive package was available, which also upgraded the engine to an Ecoboost that produced 355 horsepower.
Despite car buyers flooding the SUV and truck market, the Ford Flex never took off. Sales reached an all-time high in 2010 with just 34,227 units in total. A facelift in 2013 did not boost sales and Ford ultimately discontinued the vehicle for the 2020 model year.
BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo
The Gran Turismo is a fastback body variant of the BMW 3-Series sedan. The car's exterior styling, combining elements of both wagons and sedans, certainly didn't appeal to everyone. Yet again, car buyers preferred SUVs and crossovers rather than the niche variant of the 3-Series.
BMW announced back in 2019 that the GT trim will not be available from the 2020 model year onwards. The German automaker hasn't released details of any successor for the GT body style.
BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo
BMW's 6-Series is already a niche-oriented vehicle. The current-generation of the 4-door sedan has been around since 2017. It competes with the Audi A7, Mercedes-Benz CLS, and the Porsche Panamera. The car is fitted with a rear-wheel-drive drivetrain as standard, though an AWD "xDrive" drivetrain is available as an extra option.
Much like the 3-Series Gran Turismo, the GT variant of the 6-Series is an extremely niche-oriented vehicle. It was supposed to be an alternative for Crossovers, though car buyers were not convinced. The quirky sedan was dropped for the 2020 model year, as the all-new 8-Series was introduced as BMW's new flagship sedan.
Cadillac CTS
The Cadillac CTS was first released for the 2003 model year. The latest, third-gen CTS was unveiled in 2013. Its most powerful variant, the CTS-V (pictured above), was fitted with the same supercharged 6.2L V8 motor that can be found in the Corvette Z06 or the Camaro ZL1. The CTS-V makes a whopping 640 horsepower and can reach 60mph in just 3.6 seconds!
In 2019, the American manufacturer announced that the Cadillac CTS will be discontinued by the 2020 model year. The all-new Cadillac CT5 was released as the sedan's successor, while the high-performance CTS-V was replaced by the CT5-V, a souped-up version of Cadillac's new sedan.
Smart Fortwo
The Smart Fortwo is a tiny, fuel-efficient subcompact car sold by Mercedes-Benz. Though the vehicle is relatively popular in Europe, it was not favored by North American car buyers. The Fortwo became available in the US in early 2008, over 21,000 units were sold that year.
Once again, the SUV craze crushed the demand for the pocket-sized Smart. Two years after the car's introduction to the US market, the sales figures were essentially sliced in half in comparison with 2008. First, the gas-powered Fortwo was dropped in favor of the fully-electric variant of the subcompact. Then, a further decline in interest forced Mercedes-Benz to stop importing the Fortwo in the US completely from the 2020 model year onwards.
Volkswagen Golf Alltrack & Sportwagen
The Volkswagen Golf is extremely popular around the world. Its Alltrack and Sportwagen variants, on the other hand, are much more niche-oriented. These two body styles of the reliable Golf did not take the United States by storm, to say the least. In fact, 2018 saw just 14,123 units of the Sportwagen trim sold in the US.
Once again, car buyers in the US simply prefer SUVs, crossovers, and trucks rather than spacious wagons. Despite dropping both body styles from the 2020 Volkswagen line-up in the US, the Alltrack trim is rumored to make a return.
Chevrolet Cruze
One of the highest-rated compact cars in the United States, the Chevrolet Cruze has been known for its extended standard features, comfortable seats, excellent gas mileage, and a smooth ride.
When the Cruze was introduced, it rivaled segment leaders such as Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic, and by 2015, Chevrolet had sold around 3.5 million Cruze cars. However, with declining sales and the arrival of new SUVs and crossovers, General Motors has decided to discontinue Cruze.
Ford Fiesta
The Ford Fiesta has been one of the best-driving and the most promising subcompact models in the market. It was launched in 2011 as a stylish small sedan and then later in 2013 added ST-Line trim levels. Over the years, the Fiesta has offered agile handling, user-friendly technology, and solid engines. All in all, this subcompact car is perfect for people looking for exceptional driving experience and fuel economy.
Ford made a game-changing decision recently to discontinue the 'Ford Fiesta' as it is focusing more on producing more trucks and SUVs.
Audi TT
The Audi TT first appeared in the year 1995 at the Frankfurt Motor Show as one of the concept cars. Later in 1998, the car was available at dealers. It is a two-door sleek sports coupe with a low profile and sweeping lines. It was available in front-wheel drive, Quattro four-wheel drive, and MacPherson struts in the independent suspension.
The Audi TT offers multiple engine configurations, starting from 168 horsepower to 355 horsepower. It also accelerates from a dead stop and produces up to 60 mph speed in just 4.7 seconds. While this model won't be manufactured anymore, it will be replaced by the all-new electric model, which is exciting news.
Volkswagen Touareg
The Volkswagen Touareg made its debut in the year 2002 and has survived in the United States for 16 years. It boasts standard driver assistance features, reclining rear seats, easy-to-operate infotainment system, a comfortable ride, and a high-end interior. However, the below-average engine drops down the value of this midsize luxury car.
Volkswagen has decided to discontinue the Touareg in the U.S market as they are planning to come up with newer and better versions. In Europe, the Touareg continues to survive with a fresh new look.
Chevrolet Volt
Another car that we won't get to see anymore is the Chevrolet Volt. In 2007, the Volt was introduced at the North American International Auto Show as a concept car. And then, in 2010, it was available at dealers and was known as the car of the century.
The most interesting feature of Chevrolet Volt is that it runs on a battery and only when it runs out, it starts using a gasoline engine, making it a great option for those who want to reduce their carbon footprint. However, with the announcement of the cost-cutting campaign, GM decided to stop producing the Chevrolet Volt and are said to be working on all-electric vehicles.
Buick LaCrosse
The Buick LaCrosse replaced Century and Regal and first appeared on the market in 2005. It is a four-door sedan, which boasts all the features of a larger car. In 2017, the Buick LaCrosse model was completely redesigned and powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 310 horsepower. It also came with an eight-speed transmission and was available in an all-wheel drive.
As compared to other sedans, it is comfortable and roomy and offers a smooth ride, extra plush seating, and a quiet interior. In the meantime, GM has already decided to discontinue LaCrosse by 2020, while closing the GM Detroit-Hamtramck plant where it was manufactured.
Cadillac XTS
The Cadillac boasts a range of high-class full-size luxury cars, which have never failed to impress the buyers. In 2013, the Cadillac introduced the XTS model and replaced the classic Cadillac DeVille, DTS, and STS. It features four-doors, a luxurious interior, a spacious cabin, and robust engines.
The Cadillac did not make any significant changes to 2019 XTS, making it one of the least desired cars. And now, with the introduction of the CT model, Cadillac has also decided to discontinue the XTS.
Ford Taurus
The Ford Taurus was first introduced in 1986 and was one of the unique inventions of Ford. From the years 2005 to 2007, the Taurus was briefly renamed as Five Hundred, but within a short span, it was given back its original nameplate.
This sedan is affordable and features a large trunk and a comfortable ride. It was also amongst the best-selling cars between the years 1992 and 1996, but since then the sales have been dramatically reduced, which is the biggest reason to discontinue the model.
Toyota Corolla iM
The Toyota Corolla iM is a compact car that comes with a good reliability rating, strong engine options, and beautiful interiors. The most recent version of the Corolla iM features excellent gas mileage, ample cargo space, responsive touch screen, and more. Overall, this car provides satisfactory performance.
Similar to the iA, the Corolla iM started as one of the products of Scion. And now, with the Toyota badge, the manufacturing of the iM will stop to make way for new and improved models of Corolla.
Nissan Juke
The Nissan Juke started selling in the U.S. in the 2011 model year. It is popularly known for its sporty performance, stylish looks, and available AWD capabilities. It also boasts impressive fuel economy estimates, but for that, you have to use premium fuel. Most rivals out there cannot match the driving dynamics and functionality of Juke.
The United States market will not get this compact crossover SUV anymore as Nissan has decided to replace it with the all-new Kicks, which is a capable multi-activity and dynamic vehicle.
Nissan Titan Diesel
The Nissan Titan Diesel XD was first introduced in the United States in 2016. This full-size pickup truck comes with a bold design and capabilities of a heavy-duty hauler and the affordability of a light-duty pickup. It features a 5.6-liter V8 engine, a comfortable and quiet interior, smooth ride, and an attractive cabin. However, the Titan lags behind its class rivals when it comes to feature availability, ride quality, and cabin space.
As per recent reports, Nissan is discontinuing its diesel-powered Titan XD truck because of declining sales. A gasoline-powered model will replace the Nissan Titan diesel pickup.
Nissan Rogue Hybrid
The Nissan Rogue Hybrid is a small crossover SUV, which is available in SL and SV trims. It is powered by a four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine and paired with an electric motor that produces up to 176 horsepower. It also delivers a smooth ride, excellent safety scores, along with an upscale cabin. However, the grabby brakes and lackluster acceleration hinders the performance of the SUV.
For the model year 2020, the Nissan Rogue Hybrid will be discontinued due to reduced sales. However, it's competitor Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, and both plug-in hybrid and hybrid editions of 2020 Ford Escape are on the way.
Fiat 500e
Along with the 500, Fiat also says goodbye to the battery-powered hatchback version Fiat 500e. In 2010, the electric 500e made its first appearance at the Detroit Auto Show and then officially went on sale in 2012. It is quieter and smoother than the Fiat 500 and is powered by an electric motor that produces up to 111 horsepower.
On the inside, the 500e boasts faux-leather upholstery, automatic climate control, a user-friendly infotainment system, a digital gauge display, and navigation. When compared to other electric cars, the 500e is less appealing and only delivers 84-mile range, which is way behind other competitors.
Ford C-Max Hybrid
After six years of a sharp drop in customer demand, Ford has now decided to discontinue the C-Max Hybrid. It was launched in the United States in 2012 and has been known for its quick acceleration, low ownership costs, excellent fuel economy, and a well-built cabin.
It also has a couple of drawbacks, including a small cargo hold and fewer safer safety features than most of its rivals. The Ford C-Max hybrid is powered by a four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine and an electric motor that produces up to 188 horsepower.
Ford Focus
Ford killed its entire car lineup, including the Focus, which was one of the best-selling vehicles in the United States. Earlier, it was reported that Ford would at least keep the Active model in America, but the company later decided to discontinue the model to make way for new models.
The Focus was the best option for people who wanted a compact and sporty car. This car has plenty of strengths, including excellent handling, above-average predicted reliability rating, spacious front seats, powerful engines, and a comfortable ride even on uneven surfaces. It also has a few weaknesses, which include limited head and legroom in rear seats and hesitant dual-clutch transmission.
Ford Fusion Sport
The Ford Fusion Sport was introduced in the United States in 2005 and ranked amongst the top midsize car class. This car has many highlights, including a roomy interior with five seats, advanced safety features, available all-wheel drive, available touch-screen, and zippy turbocharged engines. But, it also comes with a few drawbacks such as poor fuel economy, outdated infotainment system, and a lackluster base engine.
Ford Motor Company recently announced that it would discontinue the Fusion Sport trim for the 2020 model year, focusing more on providing popular models. However, the other versions of the sedan will still be available until 2021.
Lincoln MKT
The Lincoln MKT is a luxury midsize SUV that comes with a spacious cabin and a punchy turbocharged engine. As compared to other luxury vehicles, the MKT finishes near the bottom because of its outdated interior styling, clumsy handling features, and poor fuel economy. Over the years, there were hardly any updates in the car, which lowered its value in the U.S market.
Ford is discontinuing the Lincoln MKT because they have a larger strategy to replace or revamp 75% of its cars by the end of the model year 2020.
Nissan 370Z Roadster
The Nissan 370Z Roadster has been known to deliver great performance as compared to average SUVs and sedans. However, being a sports car, its athleticism is not enough. Also, it offers outdated technology and old-looking interior. The most appreciated part of this car is the easy-to-use infotainment system.
Since 2009, Nissan 370Z Roadster has hardly seen any updates. Therefore, Nissan has decided to discontinue the 370Z Roadster for the model year 2020. However, the old Nissan 370Z coupe will continue to live on and will be sold alongside the 50th Anniversary Edition coupes and Nismo in 2020.
Mercedes-AMG SL 63
The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 is a great luxury cruiser that delivers high-performance and features a V8 engine with 577 horsepower and a dual-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission. It also comes with other performance upgrades, including stronger brakes and a limited-slip differential.
Followed by axing the V12-powered SL 65 last year, Mercedes is now retiring the SL 63. They are currently working on producing a new generation of the SL-class to replace the versions that were introduced back in the model year 2013.
Chevrolet Equinox Diesel
The Chevrolet Equinox is one of the best compact SUV cars, which is popularly known for its stellar fuel economy, easy-to-use tech features, and capable handling. Additionally, it also offers a smooth ride and a user-friendly infotainment system. The Equinox lags when it comes to areas like cargo space and interior quality.
The diesel model of the Chevrolet Equinox won't stick around for the year 2020. It is reported that the slow sales forced Chevrolet to discontinue the diesel version. However, the current Chevrolet Equinox isn’t going anywhere.
